The turning away
from the source of the eternally pure life produced the human intellect which
belongs to level of material being.
When the Inner
Life can no longer guide the person because of his externalization, he uses his
intellect increasingly, which helps him to orient himself and find his way. The
intellect is an aid, a crutch, an instrument used whenever the inner being, the
consciousness, is no longer relied upon, whenever the consciousness is no
longer adequate to guide the person, because it is stunted, suppressed or
covered.
Thus, our words
and thoughts are often determined less by our sensations than by our intellect.
It dictates to us the words and also the thoughts that do not correspond with
our inner being and therefore do not unfold it.
The intellect
pursues quite different goals. It serves our human inclinations; it serves to
secure for us a place in this world, in the material existence. The intellect
is an adviser to our person, not to our soul. It feeds our self-will and
defends it against the low voice of our conscience.
The intellect is
a crafty deceiver. It clothes itself in a shiny garment. It is respected and
admired and is therefore cultivated by many. It has a substantial part in the
manifestations of our human personality, of which we are often so proud.
The intellect
wants to shine. It seeks recognition, fame and honour. It proves what it wants
to prove with seeming logical consistency. With it, the structures of false
truth, which support material life, are erected.
Since the human
intellect does not belong to spiritual life, it cannot grasp the spiritual true
life, the eternal truth. Therefore, it rejects everything spiritual and refers
to it as not existent.
The intellect
controls our thought processes often more than we realize. The thoughts, which
come mainly from the intellect, lead their own life in our brain cells. They
are not connected with our inner sensations and strive to suppress them and
even displace them.
Thoughts that
come from the intellect lead us without, not within. They are not suitable to
develop our Inner Life. They are rather a hindrance and an impediment on the
path within.
Our spiritual
consciousness should awaken and radiate more and more. The indwelling light, the
divine consciousness in us, should gradually take hold of the outer person and
spiritualize him. The divine wisdom should triumph over the human intellect.
Our brain cells should align with our spiritual consciousness more and more.
Then our faculty
of thought will gradually serve the Spirit in us.
The human
intellectual thinking is burdened with opinions and conceptions, desires and
inclinations. It analyses, enhances and belittles. As we progress on the Inner
Path, it will be ennobled, refined and spiritualized.
Intellectual
thinking becomes "hearts thinking", which streams forth the largely
unfolded inner consciousness.
